Mayor Bowser to Call on Congress to Pass Common Sense Gun Reform; Will Recognize MPD’s Gun Recovery Unit

(Washington, DC) – On the heels of today’s U.S. House of Representatives gun vote sit-in, tomorrow, June 23 at 10:45 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will call on Congress to pass Common Sense Gun Reform amid a growing epidemic of gun violence across the nation. Mayor Bowser will be joined by Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier as they highlight the tremendous efforts of the police department’s Gun Recovery Unit in getting illegal guns off the streets of DC.
The Narcotic and Special Investigation Division’s Gun Recovery Unit was re-instituted in 2007 by Chief Lanier. The team conducts firearms interdiction operations to recover illegal guns in the District and also has detectives who investigate and track the origins of those firearms. Just today, the Unit assisted with the recovery of weapons in Ward 7.
